Binondo's Famous Shanghai Fried Siopao in Ongpin

Famous Shanghai Fried Siopao in Ongpin, Binondo

As we fast forward to 2026, Binondo's food scene still remains strong, and perhaps even buzzier than before. This is evidenced by the thriving number of restaurants and food shops popping around the area. Also interestingly, most of those that I've blogged about way back 2014 (i.e. the first time I had my food trip there) are still standing strong today.

The famous Shanghai Fried Siopao along Ongpin Street, for example, has gathered more attention over the years, and whenever I pass by the area, I see a thick crowd queueing up just to get hold of that steamy toasted buns. No pun intended here.

My first encounter back in 2014
When I first held our Binondo Food Trip P250-Challenge (you may want to read this article for nostalgia), back when I was all innocent and young. We decided to search for a dessert place right after our 3rd stop at The Original Sa Lido Restaurant (read more)

However, we noticed this signage followed by a fresh waft of something delicious. We then noticed that the aroma was coming from this humble stall selling what they call 'Shanghai fried siopao'. At that time. they were selling their siopao at an affordable price of P17. However, based on my recent visit this 2026, they now cost P35. Still relatively affordable given inflation and all.

I could tell that they were freshly cooked because of the warmness of the siopao. One of my food trip buddies even had his siopao fall off from his hand because it was really hot! So, please be careful when you buy yours. Make sure to grab those buns firmly. No pun intended, still.

Here's a photo of what I bought more than a decade ago:

The filling looked very delicious and had a hint of herb taste. True enough, it tasted as good as it looked. I also asked my friends what they can say about it. They all noted that they liked how it tasted, and thought it was "sulit".

A recent visit this 2026, and the business is more than thriving!
I had another round of food trip in Binondo, and finally I got to refresh my memory and try the fried siopao here once again. First thing I noticed was the cosmetic upgrade. They now have a huge signage outside the store, and they have this cute neon signage saying 'Always Hot 35 Each'.

But, what I love the most about the place is how they retained their old signage. That was iconic, and I'm glad that they chose to keep it. I just find it it endearing when restaurants or any food shops embrace their humble roots. So, kudos to you 'Shanghai Fried Siopao'!

Also, funny thing is, even until now I'm not sure what the name of the store is. The only signage they have for their business is "Shanghai Fried Siopao", so I assume this is the name of the place. Anyway, I recommend that you add this to your line up when you visit Binondo for a food trip!
