Tokyo Tonteki’s Affordable Sets with Unlimited Rice

Tokyo Tonteki’s Affordable Sets with Unlimited Rice

Tokyo Tonteki has always been one of my go-to restaurants in Greenbelt especially during those times when we are either (1) on a budget or (2) unsure of where to eat (or both).

Back in my SGV days, we often pick this for our Friday eat outs. The affordability just perfectly suit our salary range. This explains why my first blog about this place was with my SGV family. You may take a peek of my past by checking the article out here - Tokyo Tonteki - Unlimited Rice, Miso Soup and Cabbage (circa 2015).

Crazy Maki of Tokyo Tonteki in Greenbelt

'Changing times' or 'changes brought by time' Ever since I started working in my new job, I could no longer visit this restaurant. Shorter lunch and low proximity are the major reasons. In fact, it was just during this weekend (on a Sunday in particular) when I had the chance to dine here again. My younger brother, his girlfriend and my sister all haven't tried dining here in Tonteki, so we eventually opted for this. I also had the upper hand since this was a libre for my younger brother who by the way just passed his Mechanical Engineering exam.
Anyway, since this is just an update, I´ll just proceed with the dishes we had for the night. You may want to check out my first article for some insights about the interior.

Let´s start off with the appetizer - Crazy Maki (P160). Considering the affordability of this dish, the rolls didn´t fall short in giving delight to the palate. The abundant Japanese mayo on top drove our palates crazy with its smooth and creamy texture. Not to mention the tartness it gave to the roll.

Mini Chopped Tonteki of Tokyo Tonteki

Unfazed by inflation but rather the opposit, the Mini Chopped Tonteki Set is now priced at P285 (from P295), definitely all worth it considering the unlimited rice, soup, cabbage and eggplant that go with. The taste was also consistent — offering me the same comforting goodness as I tasted it the first time. In other words, this is still a great buy!

A newer discovery (though this has been in the menu for so long) was the Menchi Katsu Set (P295). It's perfect for cheese lovers as the menchi katsu balls ooze with cheese as you slice them open.

The flavor was fantastic -- meaty with the right amount of saltiness from seasoning and the cheese. It was also fried well evidence by its semi-golden crispness. This instantly became a new favorite here in Tokyo Tonteki. It's a more affordable version of Yabu's Menchi Katsu.

A Not-So-Popular Kid in Tokyo Tonteki, Greenbelt

This basically ends the blog post. We opted to have our dessert in Pink Berry, but that's a completely different story. Anyway, to end let me just say that even if I might have aged and changed, my love for a particular restaurant often stays the same. Tokyo Tonteki was not an exception.

Tokyo Tonteki will always have a place in my heart. It's one of those restaurants where affordability meets good food. Service used to be so-so before, but with this latest visit, all the servers were warm and welcoming. I suggest the signature Mini Chopped Tonteki (or go for the Large Tonteki if your budget permits, good for sharing). The Chicken Karaage and Menchi Katsu are dishes you may want to try, both are sets which include unlimited rice, cabbage, miso soup and eggplant side dish.
