Bamboo Blossom - authentic homecooked Chinese food in Makati

Bamboo Blossom - authentic home-cooked Chinese food in Makati

Who would have thought that a day would come when I'd get to review a restaurant owned by someone I personally know, let alone my dad's? Now, of course, as a show of support, I am writing about it here in this blog. So, allow me to introduce my dad's restaurant: Bamboo Blossom. I'll be sharing a bit of its story along with the dishes I personally recommend you try.

A restaurant that blossomed from an aspiration
Bamboo Blossom started off as a dream. My father always wanted to have a business that centralizes on creating a space that cultivates memories and relationships, and as someone born from Chinese parents, the best way that he knows how to do it is through food, Chinese cuisine in particular. Hence, he built this restaurant together with a few of his partners in one of the less busy corners of Makati City. While it is currently still on its early stages, and considerably in its soft opening, I want to believe that it will grow stronger over the years, just like a real bamboo.

Bamboo Blossom's location is nestled in the intersection of Bautista and Dayap Streets. It is a few roads away from the borders of Manila, so you can imagine that the vibe is more neighborhood-y contrasting with the typical association of the hustle-and-bustle chaos of Makati.

My dad drew inspiration from his childhood favorites as well as other dishes he grew to like over the years, and he made them part of the menu here in Bamboo Blossom. Take for example this siomai (see photo below). He likes it at this size, and the flavor he wants is a combination of savory, briny and a hint of seafood. Texture is rightly soft yet with a bite. And that's exactly how the siomai is here.

The next dishes I'll be talking about are my personal favorites. I have been ordering these for the past months, and they consistently deliver that comforting goodness I always crave for.

Now, I'd always go for the Spinach Soup. It has this rich blend of seafood (e.g shrimp, squid, mushrooms and spinach), and it is straightforwardly heartwarming.

The Signature Claypot Rice (Pork) is a bestselling dish here in Bamboo Blossom, and this is something I find unique. As a Filipino-Chinese myself and having gone to different Chinese restaurants, this dish is something that I don't easily find elsewhere. Hence, I highly recommend that you give it a try. It has this distinct oriental taste that gives it a flavorful character.

Bamboo Blossom's Special Tempura

The two top dishes I cherish here in Bamboo Blossom are the (1) Tempura, and (2) Salt and Pepper Squid. Arguably, Tempura is not a Chinese dish, but I'd consider it as an extended inclusion to the cuisine. Also, Bamboo Blossom's menu includes a few traditional Filipino favorites such as Lechon Kawali, Pork Sisig and Crispy Pata. That's also embracing my dad's Filipino-ness in him.

Going back to the tempura, the reason why I love it is that they use huge shrimps, and the batter has this playful tender crunch to go with it, giving it an enjoyable bite each time.

Bamboo Blossom's Salt and Pepper Squid

The Salt and Pepper Squid is a dream! It has this crunch and explodes with an intense season of flavors. The overtone is garlicky with a bit of a kick, but as you chew more of it, an immense balanced taste of squid and spices jolts the palate.

Bamboo Blossom's Three Cups Chicken

There are other dishes to explore and try here in Bamboo Blossom, and I'd leave that exploration with you, but some other dishes include the Three Cups Chicken (photo above) and Fish Fillet Tofu (photo below).
